Google Analytics Address RegEx Tool

Google Analytics One of the handy features of Google Analytics is the “Filters” feature. Want to make sure your visits to your site aren’t tracked? Just create a filter for your external IP address[1] and you’re good to go.

Surprise! Big Traffic

How to tell it may be a long night:

Traffic!

From under 1 MBits/sec to 10 all at once. *bam*

The WatchGuard Edge X55e firewall is not doing well with this sort of volume. It dumps the VPN connections not long after each reboot and then seems to stop responding after 20 or 30 minutes. A reboot gets it back on track for a bit.

The 250 MB Challenge and How to Measure

The GigaOm site has an interesting article up about the upcoming 250GB/month cap from Comcast. I must say, as a Comcast internet user,  that the whole thing makes me sad. But I also don’t think we ever get close to that cap so, to be honest, I’m not sure if I care or not.

Should I?

The article went on to list some tools that can be used to monitor your own bandwidth which can be helpful. Now, in our household, we have a bunch of computers all networked and using the one broadband connection. I really don’t want to have to install an app on each computer.

That Whole DNS “thing”

You’ve probably been inundated with news about Dan Kaminsky’s DNS cache exploit, potentially one of the biggest Internet-wide vulnerabilities ever announced. Unpatched DNS servers can be easily tricked into leading users to bogus Web sites, and literally, without patching the DNS servers (and sometimes the clients) there is little the average end-user can do. Although many Internet security experts believe this flaw is critical, but way overhyped, there is a likely chance that the crimeware industry will be working overtime to utilize this exploit.

Why isn’t Networking in Every Curriculum?

This afternoon I was invited to an incredible lunch and discussion with Indiana Business College. Indiana is well-known for having some of the finest schools in the country, and in the world, but the folks at IBC recognize that we’re in a rapidly changing world. They are making an aggressive push to ensure that they will stay ahead of the curve.

The Cisco I-Prize Finals!

My team of good friends, Jason, Bill, Carla and I drove to Cincinnati yesterday for our final I-Prize presentation with Cisco. The Carmel facility is a lot closer but Cisco needed to move us to enable their full Innovation team to be present.

The Finals!

With over 1100 international entries to the contest, we were selected and made the 32 semi-finalists. Now we were one of the final 12 ideas presenting in front of the very board who initiated the contest. No pressure, huh?
