3 Steps to Protect your Blog from a Big, Fat Lawsuit

Today was the first day of BlogINDIANA and it was fantastic. I did a lot of twittering from the event, and even ran a live feed for a little while.

The first session I attended really blew me away, it was on the legal aspects of blogging. The session wasn’t run by an attorney but by a blogger, Andrew Paradies, who really took note of all of the intricacies of the legalities associated with blogging. The topic was so compelling that I immediately edited my footer and added a Disclaimer to my Terms of Service page.

Social Bankruptcy?

Many people have heard of (or used) the phrase “E-Mail Bankruptcy” which was, I believe, first coined by Lawrence Lessig (Call it the Dead E-Mail Office). From the cited article:

In a script-driven note sent out last week, Lessig wrote: “Dear person who sent me a yet-unanswered e-mail, I apologize, but I am declaring e-mail bankruptcy.”

He went on to note that he had spent 80 hours the prior week sorting through unanswered e-mail built up since January 2002, and had determined that “without extraordinary effort” he would simply never be able to respond to these messages.

Social Aggregating

Social Aggregation seems to be the new cool thing in the web 2.0 world this week. The premise seems sound: Why follow folks via a dozen different services? Instead, pull them all into one service and follow there.

To that end, I’ve been experimenting with a couple of the apps this week. Both have great potential. And, in my humble opinion, neither quite hits the target.
