Things to Give Thanks For…

Here in the States, Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November. It’s a week of family, celebrations and giving thanks for all the good in your life. Here at Mixx, we’ve got a lot to be thankful for, but the main thing by far is our great group of Mixxers who have created such an awesome community.

In return, we like to give our Mixxers stuff to be thankful for.  We crunched real hard this week to finish up a few things before the long weekend (which we’re also thankful for!).

So without further ado, the new stuff:

Early Gifts from the Jolly Mixx Elves!

We snuck out of the office last weekend and, while we were out shopping we couldn’t help but notice that it’s been Christmas for about three weeks already. Apparently that’s the “October Surprise;” not what most of us thought it might be, but well, there it is. And because the Holidays are here earlier than ever this year, we thought we’d get in on the fun and add a few treats to your Mixx!

Where Have All The Good Pics Gone?

Hey everyone

Just a quick note to let you know that we’re in the process of fixing up image submit.  We received a number of reports of problems with Image upload over the last 18 hours or so (thanks to those who reported it).

What was happening was that we were migrating a bunch of our servers to new hardware and in doing so, the connection between our image server and the rest of the hosts got lost somewhere on the interwebs.

Image uploads should be fixed now, but we have one last issue with avatar switching that we’re in the process of fixing now.

Sorry about the trouble and thanks for the feedback!

A Cool End to Another Hot Summer

August is traditionally a slow news month, but that’s not going to stop us from letting you in on a few tweaks we’ve made to Mixx! Besides if we share these now, we’ll have more time to focus on the post-Labor Day goodies we have in store.

MDC on Deki now alive!

The Mozilla Developer Center is now up and running on MindTouch Deki. Enjoy, and please let me know of any problems. I’m sure there are going to be a few things to clean up, but I’ve done everything on my list of stuff to do before things roll out.

I expect to work on Wednesday but am currently planning to be conspicuously hard to reach on Thursday and Friday.

My thanks to the guys in IT and webdev as well as, of course, the fine folks at MindTouch for all their hard work making this happen!

Preservation of Web Resources: Making a Start | JISC-PoWR | 27 June

I mentioned my involvement on the legal aspects of this project in an earlier post — the project is having its first event on the 27th of June. For more see below:

The JISC-sponsored Preservation of Web Resources project (JISC-PoWR) will be running its first workshop in London. The aim of the series of workshops is to gain and share feedback from institutional Web, information and records managers about the challenges presented by Web resources.

The first workshop, entitled ‘Preservation of Web Resources: Making a Start’, will be held from 10.30 am - 4pm on Friday 27th June 2008 at Senate House Library, University of London. It is free to attend and open to all members of HE/FE Institutions and those working in the public sector.

MDC rollout coming soon

We’re working on scheduling the final rollout of the MindTouch Deki based MDC, sometime in June. Our original target was June 3, but that slipped by about a week due to some changes that we decided to make a couple of weeks ago.

That slip now puts us into colliding head-on with the Firefox 3 release, more or less, so we’re negotiating a rollout date with the IT team, to make sure we don’t overload them trying to roll out two things at once.

The finishing touches are going onto the setup now, and QA has been brought in to start doing their formal testing.

Computer Recommendations for Incoming Students

The College of Wooster recommends the Apple Macintosh and Dell lines of laptop and desktop computers for incoming students. Most retail chains like Best Buy or Circuit City offer back to school deals on computers. While these deals offer a lower sticker price, they don’t always include useful products like extended warranties, accidental damage protection, and productivity software. Extended warranties are a good idea. A logic board replacement can cost upwards of $900. A four year warranty will ensure that the computer will last throughout the student’s four years at Wooster. Both Apple and Dell offer extended warranty options. Apple provides Applecare protection on the Macbook, Macbook Pro, and iMac lines. Dell offers a four year warranty with onsite service.
